Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the commonest
disorders affecting the intestines. It is not dangerous or
serious, but can cause considerable discomfort.
It can sometimes also be referred to as Spastic
Colon, Idiopathic Constipation or Nervous Diarrhoea.
IBS represents a disturbance in the function of the bowel
(or lower part of the gut)
that is often linked to feelings and emotions. It is not
associated with any inflammation or structural changes to the
bowel. The word ‘Syndrome’ is a medical term for a collection
of signs and symptoms.
Symptoms of IBS
Symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. Most
commonly the symptoms are abdominal discomfort and disturbance
of bowel habit, which may consist of one or more of the
following: diarrhoea, constipation, urgent need to go to the
toilet after eating, presence of mucus in the stool or
sensation that the bowel is never fully emptied, or is
blocked.
Patients may also suffer from a variety of other symptoms,
which can include:
Nausea |
Loss of appetite |
Audible rumbling or
gurgling |
Excessive wind |
Anxiety |
Depression |
Backache
Urinary problems
Bloating or swelling of
the stomach |
Indigestion |
Fatigue |
Dizziness
What causes IBS?
It is not caused by infection. Toxins in food do not cause
it. Food allergy is a very rare cause of IBS. Although there
seems to be no specific cause, stress is one of the main
factors, but a number of factors can bring on an attack or
aggravate the symptoms. These factors are often life events
associated with a sense of loss; they include:
The death of a close friend or relative |
Divorce |
Loss of a job
Moving home
Changing occupation or retiring
The menopause
Hysterectomy |
Anything that causes
stress or
anxiety
What actually happens in the gut?
The gut is a continuous long tube, with a muscular wall,
which goes from the mouth to the anus (back passage). Food is
absorbed along its length and waste products are left behind.
The muscular wall contracts in a wave like way, which moves
the contents along towards the anus. In IBS, these
contractions in the bowel become out of rhythm and
disorganised, causing spasms or ‘cramps’. These are painful.
Too many contractions can cause constipation, and too few can
cause diarrhoea.
Who Suffers from IBS?
It is thought to affect approximately 1 in 3 people at some
time in their life It can occur in anyone, at any age. Occurs
most frequent and severe in women age 20 to 50yrs.
What Treatments are available?
There is no cure for IBS, although the condition may just
fade away.
| Medical treatment
Antispasmodics, which reduce the pain
by relaxing the muscle spasm. |
Antidiarrhoeal medications can
reduce the frequent need to go to the toilet |
High fibre
pharmaceutical bulking agents that act like fibre, can
alleviate constipation. |
Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis will automatically cause the bowel to reduce its
level of activity. |
Hypnosis can be used to relieve stress,
reduce anxiety and helps patients to relax (stress and anxiety
being recognised as a major cause of IBS.) |
The patient can be taught self-hypnosis techniques in a
relatively short time. |
In some cases it can avoid, or reduce, the need for
medication. Although, always consult with your GP before
altering any prescribed treatment. |
| Self
help
Avoid specific foods that obviously make your symptoms
worse |
Regular exercise helps with well-being and helps cope
with the condition |
Keep a diary to see if you can identify factors such
as foods or life-style
